Gwen’s Story

“Our lives are ever changing and evolving, much like the pieces I create. They evolve, adapt, change and finally become finished – ready to share; to shine. For me, painting is intensely reflective and intuitive work. My hope is that viewers will experience a real sense of peace and renewed wonder for life through my paintings.”

Since early childhood, Gwen has enjoyed working with a variety of art mediums. In high school, her graphic arts instructor, Mr. Grundholm was her inspiration and mentor, always pushing her to reach for excellence.

After high school in the city, she married and moved to her husbands family farm in Central Alberta where they raised three children. This change of environments opened her world to new artistic opportunities. She began painting watercolours at her kitchen table when her children napped, as it afforded a quick and easy clean up that fit into motherhood. Although her life has been full of many different professional endeavours, creating works of art has remained her constant joy and passion.

In 2006, she began working in the ancient art form of Encaustic – painting with hot wax on birch wood panels. This new medium is gaining much attention as people fall in love with the warmth, smell and wonderful texture it naturally creates. Gwen loves the luminous quality and vibrant colours as well that can be achieved through this versatile medium.

Most recently, Gwen has discovered her love for painting in oils “Plein Air,” combining her enthusiausm for the outdoors and painting in a challenging and magical way.

Living in the country, traveling the world, and working in her home studio has provided her with a great variety of opportunities. Whether it is in a traditional form or abstract, watercolor, mixed media, oil or encaustic, the warmth and sense of peace in her work reverberates throughout. Strong value contrasts and vibrant true colours created by natural light dictates her unique visual perspective.
